LABOUR UNREST IN MANGAUNG

The leadership of the ANC in its previous communication raised concerns regarding instability in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality caused by differences between the workers and employer on conditions of employment. The instability has brought about various challenges including none or limited provision of service delivery to our communities. We view this in a serious manner because we believe citizens of Mangaung are entitled to receive services.
Part of the commitments made by Regional Executive Committee was to meet with political leadership of Mangaung and the union of SAMMU. True to its commitment ANC managed to discuss with Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality and SAMMU with the view to conclude on the lasting solution.
Through engagements with the above mentioned structures, a particular conclusion was reached. The ANC instructed employer component sitting in Local Labour Council (LLF) to convene their meeting within 48 hours to put into action recommendations arrived at between ANC, SAMMU and Municipality. The Regional Secretary of the ANC was mandated by PEC and REC to monitor progress and implementation thereof.
However the ANC condemns in the strongest terms elements of criminality which took effect throughout this unrest including the recent incident of the burning of City hall. We appeal to law enforcement agencies to bring to book this culprits and face the full might of the law. In an event that perpetrators are employees of the Municipality, they should be subjected to Municipal disciplinary processes.
We characterized those who have been involved in these madness looting and burning and damaging property as nothing else but petty thugs who are taking advantage of genuine labour issues as advocated by SAMMU.
As the leader of society the ANC wish to apologies to all residents and business community who have been inconvenienced by these incidents. As the ANC we appeal for calm from both community, business and laborers of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality while we are still trying to resolve these issues speedily.
Lastly we wish to inform members of media that the ANC will be having its Regional General Council as per the Constitution on 25-26 June 2017. Members of media are all invited and the venue will later be communicated to you.
