On this day, Nelson Mandela was released unconditionally from prison after 27 years. Accompanied by his then-wife Winnie, he left the Victor Verster prison (later renamed Drakenstein Correctional Centre) on the outskirts of Paarl and was driven the 60 kms to Cape Town by African National Congress'(ANC) Rose Sonto along a route lined by thousands of supporters.
Exactly 25 years ago tomorrow, on the 11th of February, our late former President Nelson Mandela walked out of the Victor Verster prison as a free man after twenty seven years of imprisonment.
This day therefore marked a giant leap in the long walk to freedom, not just for Nelson Mandela but also for the people of South Africa as a whole. It was indeed a momentous occasion and a major milestone not only for us in the liberation movement but for South Africans in general, the resistance movement in the continent and the world over.
ANC CONGRATULATES ROLENE STRAUSS
The African National Congress congratulates Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, for being crowned Miss World 2014 at a glittering event held in London last night, Sunday, 14 December 2014. Rolene is a 22 year old medical student from the University of Free State.
Free State legislature speaker Sisi Mabe was a strong woman, brilliant and yet humble, the legislature's spokesman Life Mokone said on Monday.
"She was a real servant of the people and her death is a great loss to our country," she said after Mabe's death, at the age of 47, at the Vereeniging Medi-Clinic on Sunday after a long illness.
"During her lifetime, honourable Sisi Mabe served in many structures of the alliance and the ANC, including in the national working committee, since 2012," said Mokone.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
